"Mr. Zhan, let me take over."
Mila Hai gestured for him to give up his seat. William Zhan remained silent but vacated the seat, handing the apron to Mila Hai. However, he didn't leave; he stood there, watching Mila Hai wash the dishes, and remarked, "Next time, let's dine at a restaurant. It will be less trouble."
"Sure," Mila Hai agreed. Today was about impressing her in-laws and showcasing her cooking skills at home.
"What did grandma talk to you about?"
William Zhan suddenly inquired.
Mila Hai paused and met his gaze. They exchanged a look, and William Zhan detected a hint of mischief in her eyes. She recounted, "Grandma asked if we sleep in separate rooms. She urged us, now that we're married, to be bold, take the initiative, bring you down, undress you, and share a bed."
William Zhan was left speechless. That was quite the grandma's commentary.
"That's something grandma would say."
"Grandma also expressed her hope for a great-granddaughter next year. She emphasized wanting a great-granddaughter. She said if we can't have a daughter, we shouldn't stop until we do. She even mentioned prizes for having a daughter. As an elderly woman, she offered her life savings as a reward."
William Zhan was flabbergasted. His grandma's life savings were in the billions. She highly valued Mila Hai, her eldest granddaughter-in-law.
"Were there any daughters in your grandfather's generation?"
William Zhan shook his head, saying, "In my great-grandfather's generation, there was only one daughter, my great-grandfather's sister, but she passed away at a very young age, before she turned five. There have been no daughters in the generations after."
In his generation, there were nine brothers.
Mila Hai continued to wash her bowl, humor in her tone, "No wonder grandma is so generous, pledging her entire life savings. Seems like having a daughter is more challenging than reaching the sky."
However, her words triggered William Zhan's overthinking, suspecting she was now revealing her intentions. Perhaps her motive was his grandma's estate. It explained why she endeared herself to his grandma and persisted in their marriage, disregarding his preferences.
Not hearing a response, Mila Hai turned to him, observing his gloomy expression. She noticed the shift in his eyes, sharp and cold when they met hers.
Confused, Mila Hai blinked, wondering if she had said something wrong.
"Mr. Zhan?"
Without a word, William Zhan turned and left the kitchen with a grim expression, ignoring Mila Hai.
Observing his departure, Mila Hai mumbled, "So baffling. He asked, I answered truthfully, and he glared at me. I swear, I wasn't planning to 'bring him down'. He's so chilly. Maybe I'd turn into an ice sculpture before I could do anything."
Mila Hai believed William Zhan's abrupt change in demeanor was due to her mentioning the matriarch's encouragement to pursue a more intimate relationship.
William Zhan retreated to his room and remained there for a long while.
Mila Hai paid no mind to him. After all, he was a grown man. Was she supposed to coax him?
