William Lin immediately woke up and tried to identify the source of the sound, only to realize that it was Susan talking in her sleep.
Approaching her, he initially intended to pull up her blanket, but he noticed that Susan's forehead was covered in sweat, and she was still murmuring in her sleep. William Lin gently patted her to wake her up.
When Susan woke up, she looked dazed, and William Lin quickly asked, "Did you have a nightmare? Are you okay?" He reached for a tissue from the bedside table and handed it to Susan to wipe away the sweat on her forehead.
Susan sat up and took the tissue to clean herself. She then apologized, saying, "I'm sorry for disturbing you."
"It's okay; as long as you're fine, go back to sleep," William Lin replied before lying down again. However, he could sense that Susan didn't go back to sleep and seemed lost in thought.
......
In the morning, when William Lin woke up, he noticed that Susan wasn't in bed, suggesting she had already gotten up. He left the room to freshen up.
After he finished his morning routine, he found Susan carrying breakfast as she came out of her room.
Observing Susan's tired expression, William Lin asked, "Did you not sleep well last night?"
Susan shook her head without speaking.
William Lin felt that something was amiss and directly asked, "Susan, are we friends?"
Susan was somewhat surprised by the question but answered, "Yes."
"Well, since we're friends, you can tell me if there's anything bothering you. I might be able to help. Your current state suggests that something is on your mind," William Lin said.
Susan shook her head again. "There really is nothing. I was just exhausted from hiking yesterday. I'll be fine after some rest."
Seeing that Susan still didn't want to share, William Lin didn't push further and decided to wake up his mother for breakfast.
After breakfast, William Lin shared his plans with his mother, suggesting that she move in with them so they could take better care of her.
His mother immediately declined, saying, "I'd rather stay in the countryside. I enjoy living with relatives and chatting with them. If I go to Jiang City, I won't know who to chat with."
William Lin respected his mother's decision and didn't insist. "Alright, Mom, I won't bother you about it. Just let me know if you ever change your mind."
His mother then changed the topic to his marriage. "Enough about me; I just want to see you get married soon. Susan is a good girl with a nice figure and has the potential to give birth. Work harder, and maybe she'll be interested in you."
William Lin quickly left the room upon hearing this comment, but his mother continued, "Listen to me, you won't go wrong. Put in some effort, or someone else might snatch her away. She's such a great girl; where else will you find someone like her?"
He tried to escape, but his mother kept following him, insisting, "Listen to your mother, you can't go wrong. Work harder, or someone else might snatch her away. She's such a great girl; where else will you find someone like her?"
As Susan listened to William Lin's mother's words in the kitchen, her face turned crimson. She practically felt like her name was being called out explicitly. There was no way she could remain unaware of what William Lin's mother was implying.
After finishing the dishes, Susan left the kitchen and coincidentally ran into William Lin. Both of them blushed intensely at the unexpected encounter.
Observing this scene, William Lin's mother decided to take matters into her own hands. She asked, "William, is Susan pretty?" She was determined to help her son with his obvious embarrassment.
William Lin found himself in a tricky situation. He was caught between giving an answer and not answering at all.
Upon hearing his mother's question, Susan looked at William Lin, waiting to hear his response.
Unable to escape the situation, William Lin could only give an ambiguous answer, saying, "Do you even need to ask that?"
Hearing her son's response, William Lin's mother continued, "Susan, what do you think of my son's character?"
Susan was taken aback and didn't expect William Lin's mother to have a follow-up question. Now, it was William Lin's turn to watch with an amused yet ambiguous expression, as if challenging her to respond.
Blushing furiously, Susan stammered, "Auntie, please don't tease us. We really are just friends."
"I was just asking a question, I didn't say you had any other kind of relationship!" William Lin's mother seized the opportunity to tease them further.
Realizing they had fallen into William Lin's mother's trap, Susan and William Lin had no choice but to flee the scene, unwilling to continue this awkward conversation. They were well aware that William Lin's mother was very skilled at creating embarrassing situations.
Observing the reactions of the two young adults, William Lin's mother shook her head and exclaimed, "You are no match for your father! He was even bolder back in the day!"
With the days passing by peacefully, William Lin continued to prepare his mother's medication. After two days of this serene country life, he packed his bags and prepared to return to Jiang City.
His mother's treatment was nearly complete, and the relentless teasing from his mother about his relationship with Susan had made them eager to escape the situation.
The three of them stood in front of Susan's Continental GT. Lin's mother's right eyelid had been twitching all morning, and she reminded William Lin, "When you arrive in Jiang City, be sure to call me in the morning!"
William nodded and replied, "Of course, Mom. We'll be careful, and if anything happens, I'll call you right away."
With that said, William and Susan got into the car and began their journey to Jiang City. William was still behind the wheel, and Susan, not feeling well these past few days, fell asleep as soon as she got in.
Suddenly, just as they had turned a corner, William noticed a row of road spikes ahead. He slammed on the brakes and tried to steer the car away from them, but the road spikes were cleverly placed. The car lost control and crashed through the guardrail, hurtling towards the cliff.
Susan was jolted awake by the loud noise, and she heard William shout, "Quick, duck and cover your head!"
As William shouted, he caught a glimpse of Lucas Zhang standing above them, looking down. With no other option, William released the steering wheel, channeled all his spiritual energy, and did his best to shield Susan from harm.
The glass shattered, and glass fragments flew towards William's body. With a loud crash, the car finally plunged into the gorge.
William shook his head, his entire body covered in cuts from the shards of glass, a bloodied figure. He looked at Susan, whom he had protected beneath him, and saw that she was unharmed. Exhausted, he passed out.
After an unknown amount of time later, when William regained consciousness, he felt a sharp pain throughout his body as he tried to move. He winced in pain.
Susan, seeing William wake up, rushed to his side with a worried expression. She looked at him and said, "How do you feel? You must be okay!"
William looked at the bandaged wounds on his body, realizing that Susan had used her coat as a makeshift bandage. He noticed that she was now only wearing a thin t-shirt and felt touched by her care.
Half-jokingly, William replied, "I feel terrible right now."
Susan had intended to argue back but seeing William's current condition, she held her tongue. Instead, she said, "There's no cell signal here, and the car is completely destroyed. We have nothing, and there are no medicines for treatment. How can you still make jokes?"
Thinking Susan would retort, William decided to tease her a bit more, "Well, if we die, we die. At least I won't be alone on the journey to the afterlife with you by my side."
Before Susan could respond, they heard a distant roar.
