When Noah returned home, it was already ten in the evening. Pauline had just managed to put their daughter to sleep and was now hand-washing Noah's clothes. While regular clothes were tossed into the washing machine, personal garments were always hand-washed. During this period, Pauline took it upon herself to wash Noah's clothes.
Seeing Pauline diligently washing his clothes, small beads of sweat forming on her forehead, oblivious to his return, Noah couldn't help but smile faintly. A rare tenderness shone in his eyes.
After finally finishing the laundry, Pauline was about to stretch when she suddenly noticed Noah leaning against the bathroom door, looking at her with a playful grin.
Pauline let out a soft exclamation and then gave Noah an annoyed glare. "When did you get back?"
Noah smiled. "Just got in."
As Pauline rinsed the clean clothes, she asked, "Why are you staring at me?"
Noah's voice was gentle. "No reason. Just wanted to quietly watch you."
Hearing Noah's words, Pauline's cheeks instantly turned rosy. She bit her lip and gave Noah a look that was both shy and pleased. Noah genuinely found this moment heartwarming, while she thought Noah was teasing her.
Pauline hung up the clothes to dry and then inquired, "By the way, how did things go with that matter?"
Naturally, she was referring to the encounter with the kidnappers and the subsequent car accident this afternoon. However, she had just woken up and was immediately taken away by Noah. She didn't know that the thugs had all met their end, assuming they were just severely injured and unconscious.
Noah casually replied, "I have some friends in the police force. They've taken care of everything, so you don't need to worry."
Pauline breathed a sigh of relief and nodded. "That's good to hear."
Suddenly, Noah remembered something and looked at Pauline with concern. "I remember your right arm and right leg were both bruised. Are you feeling better now?"
Pauline shook her head. "It's not too serious. I didn't want my parents to worry, so I didn't mention it earlier. I'll apply some herbal ointment later."
Noah insisted, "I'll help you apply it."
Pauline's eyes widened, and she protested, "You don't have to, I can do it myself."
Noah was determined. "No more arguments. I'll go get the herbal ointment."
With that, Noah went to the cabinet to find the ointment.
Pauline's cheeks turned rosy, and she watched Noah's retreating figure with a soft murmur, "He's still so assertive."
In the living room, Pauline didn't dare to let Noah help her apply the safflower oil. She took the lead and went into the bedroom. Before long, Noah came in with the safflower oil.
Sitting on the edge of the bed, Noah instructed Pauline to roll up her sleeve, and he gently applied the safflower oil to her visibly bruised right arm. Then, he asked her to rest her injured right foot on his leg. With great care, he rolled up her pants, revealing several obvious bruises on her shin. A pained expression involuntarily crept across his face.
He poured the safflower oil into his palm and gently massaged it onto her injured leg. Noah's expression was serious, tinged with concern. Meanwhile, Pauline took the opportunity to observe Noah up close.
It's often said that men look their best when they're focused on something. Pauline found this to be true. She also noticed that Noah was the kind of man who grew more charming the longer you looked at him—an understated yet unmistakable allure. This, perhaps, was what people meant by "timelessly appealing."
As she stared at Noah's face, lost in her thoughts, he suddenly looked up and inquired, "Does it hurt?"
Pauline felt caught off guard, her pretty face instantly flushed. Her eyes darted in mild panic. "N-No, it doesn't hurt..."
Noah gave a slight smile. "Alright, I'm going to take a shower. You should get some rest."
Noah stood up to leave, but Pauline blurted out, "You should sleep with me and our daughter tonight!"
Noah, intrigued, looked at Pauline.
Her cheeks grew even redder, and she stammered, "Don't get the wrong idea! I'm just worried our daughter will wake up tomorrow and find you're sleeping in the guest room, and then she'll throw a fit."
Noah chuckled, "Alright."
...
The next morning, Cora Li, the manager of the BMW 4S dealership, had already parked a brand-new BMW M760Li xDrive with temporary plates in front of Noah's house. She was waiting for Noah to sign the contract and hand over the keys. This was the fourth BMW that Noah had purchased from her within a month.
Her impression of Noah could now be summed up in two words: extravagantly bold.
After signing the contract and collecting the keys, Noah, along with Pauline, dropped their daughter off at the kindergarten and then headed to Ningda Company. Since resolving their funding issues, Ningda Company has officially entered the operational phase.
Haitang City Village had mostly completed its demolition and was about to enter the second phase: the official recruitment of a construction team to start building the Crabapple Shopping Plaza.
At noon, the two of them went to a rural farmhouse for lunch. Despite Pauline's privileged background, her life in recent years has taught her to appreciate simplicity. When dining with Noah, she ordered a simple meal of mushroom-stewed chicken rice and braised pork ribs rice. Even the soup was the complimentary standard fare, no different from what an average office worker might have.
Noah, having been accustomed to sharing the same meals with regular soldiers during his days of leading troops in battles, was even less particular. In special circumstances, filling up wild vegetables was a common occurrence.
The two of them enjoyed their inexpensive fast food with gusto.
However, just as they were immersed in their simple happiness, an unsavory female voice suddenly pierced the air. "Oh my, isn't this our campus belle, Pauline? How come you're dining on cheap fast food here?"
Noah frowned, and he and Pauline followed the direction of the voice to see a woman with big wavy curls and sunglasses. She was wearing a brand-name long dress, and while she had a certain level of attractiveness, her heavy makeup and flashy attire exuded an air of vulgarity.
Upon seeing this woman, Pauline's expression became somewhat complex. It turned out that she was Pauline's old rival from university. Pauline greeted her calmly, "Lulu, what a coincidence!"
Lulu Tong didn't bother to exchange greetings with Noah and Pauline. Instead, she directly pulled out a chair and sat down. She said, "Yeah, such a coincidence. And who might this gentleman be?"
Pauline introduced, "He's my husband, Noah Chen."
Lulu's eyes darted around, subtly trying to find out, "Oh, I wonder what industry Mr. Chen is in?"
Noah stated the truth, "I'm currently unemployed."
Lulu immediately displayed a disdainful expression. "Ah, I see. No wonder you're eating cheap fast food here."
Noah smiled, not confirming or denying.
Pauline was slightly displeased and said calmly, "Lulu, weren't you here to eat?"
Lulu exclaimed dramatically, "Eat? Do you think I'd eat in a lousy place like this? Heavens, I never touch this kind of worker's meal."
Lulu's words not only caused Noah and Pauline to furrow their brows but also drew curious glances from the customers around them.
Pauline asked, "If you're not here to eat, then why did you come?"
Lulu, in a self-satisfied tone, said, "My boyfriend is planning a major investment in this area. He came here for an inspection, and I came along to accompany him. I usually dine at Michelin-starred restaurants. I wouldn't touch this kind of cheap fast food."
Noah stood up and said, "Pauline, I'm done eating. Wait for me, I'll bring the car over."
Pauline nodded, "Alright."
Lulu watched Noah's retreating figure and casually said to Pauline, "Tsk tsk, Pauline, you used to be the campus belle at our school. How did you end up like this? I heard you had a child out of wedlock and got kicked out of your family. But there's no need to settle for just anyone. Couldn't you find a jobless drifter to marry?"
As soon as she finished speaking, a middle-aged man in an Armani suit approached. His eyes lit up as he stared at Pauline, asking, "Lulu, is this beauty your friend?"
Upon seeing the middle-aged man, Lulu immediately leaned in affectionately, coquettishly saying, "Harvey, let me introduce you. This is my college classmate, Pauline. Pauline, this is my boyfriend, Harvey He."
Pauline nodded slightly and politely said, "Mr. He, you have achieved a lot. Lulu has found a good match."
Harvey, His gaze lingered on Pauline, and he modestly said, "It's nothing, I'm just getting started in my career."
Lulu quickly added, "Oh, Harvey, you're very accomplished. He used to be the CEO of Tianzi Company, accumulating a wealth of management experience and millions in assets. He's planning to go solo now and even bought a Mercedes worth over three hundred thousand. He's already a successful person!"
Lulu turned to Pauline and asked, "Don't you agree, Pauline?"
Pauline nodded, "Yes."
Lulu intentionally flaunted in front of Pauline, hoping to see an envious expression on her face. To her disappointment, Pauline didn't show a hint of envy or jealousy.
She quickly changed the subject, "By the way, Pauline, didn't your husband say he was coming over in a car? Why hasn't he arrived yet? What kind of car does he drive? It can't be a van, can it? Haha, that's my guess. You guys can only afford workers' meals, how could you afford a good car..."
Before she could finish her sentence, a BMW m760lixdrive worth nearly three million stopped at the restaurant's entrance.
Then, to her astonishment, Noah got out of the car.
Her mouth hung open, her face filled with disbelief. Noah was driving a BMW worth over three million, ten times more expensive than her boyfriend's Mercedes!
Noah approached, politely smiling, "Miss Tong, what were you chatting about with my wife? Seems like you were having a good time?"
Lulu and her boyfriend Harvey's faces instantly turned red. She waved her hands repeatedly, "It's nothing, really..."
With that, she hastily grabbed her boyfriend, looking embarrassed, and hurriedly left.
