"From the antique market, bought for 10,000 yuan," Thorpe Chen said indifferently.
"Ten thousand yuan, and you turned it around for a profit of 990,000 yuan?" Elton Ye stared at the check-in Thorpe Chen's hand, filled with immense regret.
He was a man who considered himself noble, but he certainly wasn't wealthy. That one million, he wouldn't earn in ten years even if he neither ate nor drank.
"Thorpe Chen, I didn't expect you to have such an eye for valuables," Lowell Fang's facial muscles twitched, cursing Thorpe Chen silently.
Today, he had lost all dignity, while Thorpe Chen had taken all the glory.
"Honey, let's go," Thorpe Chen said, supporting Gloria Ye as they left.
Throughout, Gloria Ye never looked back. Perhaps she was utterly disappointed in her own family.
"Just a million, why the fuss?" said Lowell Fang resentfully after Thorpe Chen left.
"Don't worry. That bastard Thorpe Chen is an unskilled guy. He will squander that one million in no time," another voice chimed in.
"Right, no matter how much money he has, it's never enough for people like him."
The Ye family bitterly cursed Thorpe Chen, as if he were their archenemy.
"Honey, keep this check. You won't have to work overtime so hard anymore," Thorpe Chen handed the check to Gloria Ye.
"Is this a dream? Do I now have one million yuan?" Gloria Ye looked at the check-in in disbelief.
"It's not a dream. This is our money," Thorpe Chen said with a beaming smile.
"Thorpe Chen, how did you meet Elder Wu?" Gloria Ye asked, "Did you get an offer?"
"I met him at the antique market. It was indeed an offer. Bought it for ten thousand yuan," Thorpe Chen chuckled, "This was a gift for your father. He didn't want it, so maybe we should give him this one million."
"No," Gloria Ye quickly put away the check and sighed, "I've seen their true colours and am deeply disappointed. They may do whatever they see fit. As long as you are good to me, that's all that matters."
"Don't worry, our future will be even better," Thorpe Chen smiled slightly, "We can spend this money however we want."
"You still owe someone one hundred thousand yuan. Eddie Zou won't let it go easily. I'll pay him back later. We also need to save up for a down payment for a house. We can't always live in someone else's place,"
Gloria Ye said, counting on her fingers and daydreaming about their future, her face radiant with happiness.
"Gloria Ye, if you don't come back to work soon, be ready to pack up and leave," her company's manager called at that moment.
"I'm so sorry, Manager Wang. I'll be there this afternoon," Gloria Ye quickly replied.
"Fine, if you don't come this afternoon, be ready for the handover. Don't think that just because you're pregnant, you're the boss. Believe me, I can fire you at any moment," Manager Wang persisted over the phone.
"I'm sorry. I've been unwell for the past few days, but I'm fine now. I'll get to work immediately," Gloria Ye apologized. The manager hung up abruptly.
"Didn't you take leave until tomorrow?" Thorpe Chen asked with a frown, "Resign. Your manager is an asshole. You don't need to deal with his moods."
"With just this one million, it's not time to resign yet," Gloria Ye said, holding Thorpe Chen's hand, "Honey, we have a long life ahead. Once we have our child, we need our own house. I can't be taken care of just yet. We'll have many expenses in the future."
"I just don't want to see you wronged," Thorpe Chen said with affection, "Don't worry about the future. It will be better than now."
"I know. As long as you're trying, your life will get better and better. Okay, I'm going to work. I'll keep the money, so you won't spend it recklessly. I'll find a time to repay Eddie Zou's debt," Gloria Ye kissed Thorpe Chen's cheek and left cheerfully.
"Sigh, no need to repay Eddie Zou," Thorpe Chen wanted to call her back, but she was already far away.
Thorpe Chen was caught between laughter and tears. Right now, Eddie Zou was like a mere child in his eyes. How could he dare to mention the debt? However, it was better to keep some things from her for now to prevent her from overthinking.
“Thorpe Chen, where are you? My grandfather said he felt discomfort in his chest and needs you to come over.” At this moment, Jenna Lin's call came through.
“I'm on my way.” Thorpe Chen hung up and hailed a cab, heading to the hospital.
Inside the hospital, Mr. Lin's condition seemed okay. Jenna Lin was by his side, and beside them, there was a couple in their thirties.
The man was in military attire, and the woman had a refined appearance, showing a strong family background. They were Jenna Lin's youngest aunt and uncle, Halley Lin and Garth Peng.
Max Zhou happened to be visiting Mr. Lin that day. Upon seeing Thorpe Chen, he lavished praise on him and then said with a smile, “Thorpe, Sam Xu speaks very highly of you. It would be great if we had more talented individuals like you in Fengling City's medical system.”
“Director Zhou is too kind. Compared to Mr. Xu, I'm still lacking in experience,” Thorpe Chen smiled. Max Zhou, being a leader, was always pleasant in speech, but one should take his words with a grain of salt. As they exchanged pleasantries, Thorpe Chen began to take Mr. Lin's pulse.
A moment later, he smiled and said, “Mr. Lin, there’s no need to worry. You are a bit qi-deficient. Your cold lung condition dates back several decades. To dispel this coldness will require effort. I will use acupuncture and adjust your medication; it shouldn't be a big problem.”
“Haha, that's great! Thank you, young man. This ailment of mine started over thirty years ago when I was on a mission in the snowy regions up north. I suffered frostbite in my lungs. Even Sam Xu said it couldn't be completely cured and could only be managed with medication. I didn’t expect you to heal me,” Mr. Lin laughed heartily.
“Sir, you truly are a miraculous doctor,” said Halley Lin. “Hello, I am Halley Lin. I entrust my father's illness to you. If there's anything you need in the future, our Lin family will help.”
“Too kind,” Thorpe Chen smiled. Although Halley Lin wasn't very old, the three stars on his shoulder signified his rank. Reaching such a position at a young age indicated a promising future.
“Halley, just take care of Garth Peng and yourself at the border. Don't worry about me,” Mr Lin said as Thorpe Chen continued with his acupuncture treatment. “The accidental death of your child was not your fault. Accept it and perhaps, while you're still young, consider having another child.”
Garth Peng was momentarily stunned. Upon hearing Mr. Lin's words, tears welled up in her eyes. She turned her head to hide them.
Two years ago, the couple had a child who unfortunately passed away. It had been a long time, but she had not yet recovered from the trauma.
“Dad, I understand. Garth Peng has a mental block that she’s struggling with. I will talk to her,” Halley Lin said with a sombre expression.
Thorpe Chen glanced at Halley Lin and noticed a shadow of dark qi between his brows. He saw the same on Garth Peng. His brow furrowed.
“Thorpe, is there something you want to say?” Mr. Lin, a perceptive individual, noticed Thorpe Chen's subtle change in demeanour immediately.
“I have something to say, but I’m afraid of offending Mr. Lin,” Thorpe Chen smiled.
“Speak your mind. It's fine,” Mr. Lin smiled back.
“Alright,” Thorpe Chen said as he finished with the acupuncture. He put the needles down.
“Mr. Lin has a noble appearance, a full forehead, and ears higher than his eyebrows. This facial structure signifies someone with a full destiny, prosperity in officialdom, and in his later years, he will achieve both fame and wealth and be highly respected,” Thorpe Chen smiled.
“You even know how to read faces, Thorpe,” Mr. Lin chuckled. Although he didn't believe in these things, out of respect for Thorpe Chen, he didn't voice his skepticism.
“Mrs. Lin has a high nose and refined brows, indicating prosperity in real estate. This signifies a face of many children and blessings,” Thorpe Chen smiled.
“Enough,” Garth Peng said, her face turning pale and her body trembling slightly. The pain of losing her child still lingered, so she didn't want to hear Thorpe Chen's flattery.
“Please, let me finish,” Thorpe Chen replied. “Both of you have excellent facial features, but unfortunately, you are overshadowed by a malevolent star. If I'm not mistaken, both of you married at the age of twenty-five. Mrs. Lin had three pregnancies. The first two resulted in miscarriages, and the last one resulted in a premature birth. At the age of thirty, you had a son, but he unfortunately passed away.”
