August in Hai Zhou was suffocatingly hot, and even the air was stifling.
While George Wu was fanning himself, he was fumbling with the food on the grill in front of him, flipping them over and sprinkling seasoning on. Looking at his movements, you could tell that he was not an expert.
To be honest, George wasn't that good at handling the grill. He had only been in the barbecue business for less than a month. Not only did he have novice grilling skills, his equipment was also extremely simple, including a barbecue grill, two tables, and just a dozen stools.
As for the business, it was also tepid. Of the two tables, only one was occupied by a trio, while the other was empty.
George looked at the three people with some envy. From their conversation, he knew that they were all students from a nearby school. A year ago, George was just like them. However, now he was here behind this somewhat crude barbecue grill.
"What a cold world!" George muttered in a low voice and continued to flip the skewers.
"Boss, I want ten meat skewers, ten chicken wings, ten skewers of pork belly..." When George Wu was lamenting the cruelty of society, a deep voice was heard.
George was delighted. This order was a big deal for a stall like his.
However, when George Wu looked up and took a better look at the person in front of him, he frowned slightly.
The man had dishevelled hair, some stains on his face, tattered clothes and a pair of half-torn slippers on his feet. If he was holding a bowl in his hands, he would definitely give others the impression that he was a beggar.
"Hurry up, I'm starving." Seeing that George was stunned, the man urged impatiently.
"Okay, I'm right on it." George said so, but didn't budge at all.
The man seemed to see through George's worry, "Why, are you afraid that I won't be able to pay?"
"Nonsense, with how you're dressed, everyone will be worried about that. "George complained in his heart. Of course, he didn't dare to say that out loud. It'll be too offensive. "No, no."
"Great." The man said, and then he whispered to himself, "I really don't have any money to pay."
However, George obviously did not hear the latter sentence.
"Well, since he spoke with such confidence, although his face is dirty, he does have an extraordinary aura. He probably isn't a beggar." George muttered in his heart and started to fire up the grill.
Anyone who comes by is a customer, not to mention that there were many people watching around. He couldn't just judge others by their appearance and drive them away.
After busying for a while, George finished making all the orders. He handed everything to the man and said, "Your total is three hundred and sixty yuan."
The man took the food from George's hand and started eating idlily. George didn't rush him to pay up, but rather he just kept an eye on him. As long as the man didn't leave, it would be fine even if he finished eating here.
"Boss, three more bottles of beer!" At this time, the customer at the other table shouted.
"Coming!"
George took three bottles of beer and walked towards the trio, but he was still paying attention to the man dressed as a beggar out of the corner of his eye.
"Your beer." George put the bottles on the table and turned around.
However, he was stunned when he turned around. The man dressed in rags who was previously eating, had disappeared without a trace.
George could guarantee that his eyes had only left the other person for two seconds, which were the two seconds that he put the beer down. But in these two seconds, the person disappeared!
What the hell!
George quickly ran to his stall and looked around. However, on the slightly empty street, he couldn't see the man at all. It was as if the other person just disappeared out of thin air.
Holy shit!
George cursed again. After searching and failing to find the man, he returned to his stall in frustration.
He really is a freeloader! What confidence and extraordinary aura... Those were all his own illusions!
"Hey, what is this?"
When George walked back to the stall, he found a gray ring next to his barbecue grill. He picked the ring up and looked at it. He couldn't see what material it was made of, but the surface was smooth and round.
"Could it belong to the person just now? Did he leave this ring behind as compensation since he didn't have money to pay the bill?" George thought to himself.
During this period of time, except for the person just now, there weren't any other customers that came to the front of the stall. Hence, it was obvious that the man was the owner of the ring.
"Can a broken ring be worth three hundred and sixty yuan? No wonder he just put this here and left silently." George said to himself.
Originally, he wanted to throw the ring away. However, George caressed it and thought it was fine, so he changed his mind and put it on instead. Unexpectedly, the size was just right.
"Forget it, it's better than nothing. Let's just think of it as a good deed towards the beggar." George comforted himself. Things were as it was, and there was nothing he could do anyway. So, the best he could do was not dwell on it any longer.
At about one o'clock in the morning, there weren't much people on the street anymore. Hence, George packed up his things and went home, which in other words, was a rental house of about ten square meters.
After putting the things away, there wasn't much space left in George's room. He laid on his bed and couldn't help but feel a little down as he thought about what he had been through the year after graduation.
George also graduated from a university with a bachelor's degree. However, his university was only a third-grade university and his major was not a popular one. As a result, the job he found after graduation was average, at best. However, even with such an average job, he was fired the next day under a lousy excuse because he saw something he shouldn't have seen in the manager's office.
After that, because he had average academic qualifications and little work experience, it naturally became difficult to find a job. In order to survive in this city, George had to look for a job and work part-time at the same time. In order to make some money, he tried pretty much every job under the sun. He had worked as a manual labour at a construction site, as a mascot in a shopping mall, and a waiter in a restaurant. In short, he was willing to do anything to earn some money as long as it wasn't illegal.
However, he seemed to be on a bad luck streak. He accidentally hit his foot while carrying a brick, so the foreman asked him to stop going to the site. When he saw a child fall, he wanted to help him, but the child's parents thought he frightened their child into tears, so they went to the store and made a big fuss. As a result, he was fired the next day. When he was working as a waiter in a restaurant, the chef made a mistake in the recipe, but the customers thought he served the wrong dish. He was berated by them, and then they filed a complain again, so his job as a waiter went down the drain as well.
Finally, about a month ago, he used whatever savings he had left to start his own barbecue stall, hoping to make some money during the summer.
However, the barbeque business was challenging. There were several barbecue restaurants near George's stall. With large spaces and a good environment, they were much better than his small stall. Plus, his skills were also average, so his business wasn't that good although it had already been a month. This made George, who only wanted to earn some money back, feel a little anxious.
"The worse thing was the freeloader's meal today." George thought bitterly. He looked at the ring on his hand felt a little depressed as he recalled what happened.
It wasn't easy for him to earn a living. As a result, this unpaid meal meant that his entire evening's work was for nothing, and he even had to pay some of the cost out of his pocket.
Could it be that my bad luck is back again? Will I have to close down my barbeque stall too?
In a fury, George wanted to take off the ring. However, although it was easy to put it on before, it was difficult to take it off now. He tugged and twisted the ring for a long time, but could not pull it off. Instead, his fingers was worn, and there were even a few streaks of blood flowing out.
At this time, something surprising happened. The blood was absorbed by the ring. The originally gray ring suddenly glowed as dazzling as the sun at noon.
"Host detected, binding..."
George heard a robotic voice.
