Justin had prepared a lavish feast, eagerly awaiting the Jerome family's arrival. Peter and the others were inconsequential. The key was Maxwell!
Establishing a good relationship with Maxwell would essentially mean having a favorable connection with the power center of Dongzhou!
Finally, the Jerome family arrived.
Justin hurriedly greeted them with a beaming smile. "Hey, welcome! It's a pleasure to have you here, Peter. My place is shining brightly with your presence!"
"Hahaha!" Peter smiled broadly and continued, "Mr. Martell is too kind! How could we trouble you to personally welcome us? In fact, it should be us treating you!"
"Please, come in!" Justin ushered Peter inside while searching for Maxwell's figure.
He only saw Abigail but not Maxwell.
Justin couldn't help but ask, "Peter, where is your daughter's husband? Wasn't he supposed to come with you?"
"He'll be here soon..." Peter smiled and added, "That kid is too busy with business. He just received a call a moment ago and is currently handling it remotely."
"Oh! What an ambitious youngster!" Justin chuckled.
After everyone took their seats and exchanged pleasantries, Justin stood up and walked to Abigail, bowing deeply.
"Miss Jerome, I'm truly sorry!" Justin said sincerely, "That day, I had too much to drink! It was disrespectful of me to you! I truly regret it!"
Abigail still harbored some resentment toward Justin, but since he had been supporting the Jerome family financially, she couldn't say much. She simply nodded faintly, saying, "Everything is in the past now."
"I'll punish myself with three glasses of alcohol first!" Justin poured three cups for himself and downed them quickly. "While your husband isn't here, I have a personal request, Miss Jerome. I hope you can help."
Abigail frowned and said, "Go ahead."
"I hope Miss Jerome can say a few good words to your husband for me, so he won't give me a hard time in the future."
"I will." Abigail didn't want to engage in further conversation with Justin, so she just nodded to appease him.
Justin gave her a thumbs-up and continued, "Your husband is truly skilled! That day, my two brothers were both martial arts enthusiasts, but your husband knocked them down with just one kick each."
Thinking of Jaxon claiming to be a Taekwondo black belt, Abigail wasn't too surprised. She nodded lightly.
"Look..." Justin pointed to the bandage on his head, smiling bitterly. "It's thanks to Mr. Clarkson's mercy. Otherwise, with his strength, my head would have cracked open like a watermelon."
"Hmm..." Abigail's heart stirred as she asked, "Who are you talking about? Mr. Clarkson?"
Justin paused for a moment and realized, "Your husband, Maxwell. You probably don't address each other that way. Hahaha!"
"Maxwell? Do you mean he's the one who saved me that day?"
"Yes! You were already drunk at the time, so you might not remember the details clearly." Justin laughed and continued, "You can ask Avery. She saw everything."
Boom!
Like a thunderbolt.
Abigail's mind buzzed.
Maxwell?
It was Maxwell who saved her!
Maxwell's words were true!
Jaxon took credit!
Avery lied to her!
And she had completely misunderstood Maxwell!
For a moment, Abigail felt a deep sense of guilt towards Maxwell.
Peter and his wife were also a bit dumbfounded when they heard this. They had misunderstood Maxwell; he didn't take credit at all!
Their faces alternated between red and white, not knowing what to say.
Just then, Jaxon walked in from outside. He had just received a call from the company and spent quite some time talking.
As soon as he entered the room, he smiled and said, "Sorry for being late, sorry for being late. I'll punish myself with three cups later, okay?"
Jaxon finally noticed the odd looks from the Jerome family toward him.
Abigail's gaze was as cold as midwinter ice.
Peter and his wife's gaze wasn't as icy, but they felt extremely awkward.
Justin's attitude was even worse. He had been displeased with Jaxon since the last time he went to the bank with Peter. Today, he came over again without any reservation.
"Jaxon, where did you come from? Who are you?"
"Today, Mr. Martell invited distinguished guests. What qualifications do you have to come in?"
"Get out! Otherwise, I won't be polite to you!"
Jaxon was stunned. "But I'm just..."
"Just what?" Justin glared and said, "I suggest you be careful or you might get beaten up!"
"Mr. Martell, I..."
"What about you?" Justin pointed at his nose and said, "Get out! Are you leaving or not? Do you believe I can cut off the funding from your Wade family with just a word?"
"But..."
"Get lost!" Justin grabbed a bottle of wine.
Jaxon panicked and asked, "Peter, Sophia, Abigail, what's going on?"
Abigail took a deep breath, coldly saying, "Jaxon, I've seen through your true colors. You're truly shameless!"
"What do you mean, Abigail?"
Abigail ignored him and turned to Justin, saying, "Mr. Martell, I'm sorry, I'm feeling a bit unwell. I'll leave first."
She was already repulsed by the idea of letting Jaxon impersonate her husband today, and now, hearing the truth from Justin, she had no appetite for this meal. Moreover, Justin knew that the Jerome family's son-in-law was Maxwell. If she were to expose this fact in front of everyone, Abigail felt she wouldn't be able to face such a situation.
Seeing Abigail leave, Jaxon was even more confused. He looked at Peter and his wife, asking, "Peter, Sophia, what's wrong with Abigail?"
Peter forced a smile, pulled up Sophia, and apologized repeatedly to Justin, "Mr. Martell, we're sorry. We're truly sorry. Maxwell, that little... Ahem! That kid just messaged saying there's an urgent matter at the company, so he had to go. He is really out of line. I'll talk to him when I get back!"
"Huh?" Justin looked disappointed and added, "Well... let's eat first. But what about your daughter... What happened to her just now?"
Peter had a constipated expression and stammered, "Um... That child's been a bit moody lately and quarreled with Maxwell... You know, youngsters! Hahaha, they fight in bed and make up later. I'll talk to Abigail when I get back!"
Justin breathed a sigh of relief and said, "Okay, please have a seat."
"No, no! Maxwell also asked me to go to the company immediately. We can't delay any longer. I'm sorry, excuse us! Next time, I'll treat Mr. Martell to a few drinks properly!"
With that, Peter pulled Sophia and headed out. He didn't dare to linger. The more he said, the more likely he was to expose himself. If this got out, it would be a family disgrace! If Victor found out, the consequences would be unimaginable.
As they passed by Jaxon, Peter even whispered, "Mr. Martell knows Maxwell!"
Jaxon's face immediately fell, his joy turning into immense disappointment. For a moment, he stood there dumbfounded.
Justin was even more disappointed than Jaxon. His carefully arranged plans had been disrupted. Seeing Jaxon still standing there like a fool, his disappointment turned into rage, all directed at Jaxon.
"Why are you still standing there? Waiting to freeload? Get out!"
The more Justin scolded, the angrier he became, grabbing a bottle of wine and pouring it over Jaxon's face.
"If you don't leave now, I'll break your legs!"
