Oswald's father passed away early, and he and his sister, Peggy Joyner, were raised by their mother Olga Donne.
During the years when Brett was still a teacher, he took care of their family, helping Oswald and Peggy Joyner with their studies. As a result, the two families became close, and even when the Larsen family faced troubles, it didn't affect their relationship.
Carver was grateful for the support Oswald and his family provided over the years. "Aunt Donne, Oswald, thank you for your help in recent years. If you need anything, just let me know. I'll do my best!"
Oswald patted Carver on the shoulder. "Our families are close; there's no need to say such things."
Olga Donne smiled. "Exactly, saying this makes it sound formal. Besides, when you were a child, you often said you wanted to marry Peggy when you grew up. Maybe in the future, our families will be connected."
Words were spoken without intention, yet listeners found meaning.
Oswald slapped his thigh. "Great! Carver and my sister have known each other since childhood. If they get together, I have no objections to Carver being my brother-in-law. Moreover, if they are together, taking care of our parents will not be a problem!"
Even Brett and his wife, who were worried about retaliation from the Clement Family against Carver, brightened up. Knowing each other well, Carver and Peggy Joyner getting together seemed fitting.
The conversation unexpectedly turned to Carver's future marital plans. Carver coughed awkwardly, diverting the topic. "By the way, Oswald, what are you doing now? Why don't I see sister Peggy?"
"My grades weren't good, so I started working right after high school. Currently, I'm in the electronics business." Oswald didn't notice Carver deliberately changing the subject. "My sister took half a day off this morning to move her belongings to her rental house and will be back at work in the afternoon. If you want to see her, I can help you arrange."
"By the way, my sister now works at Prosperous Group. I should thank you for that."
Because Cecilia frequently visited the Larsen family in recent years, Peggy Joyner got to know her. So, when Peggy Joyner graduated from university two years ago, Cecilia personally recruited her into the sales department of Prosperous Group.
Carver thanked his parents, "Today is Cornely's birthday. How about we have a meal with Aunt Donne's family?"
Adela, who was visibly low-spirited, replied, "Cornely is about to start her internship, and her dorm mate with the same birthday invited her to celebrate together. She'll be introduced to an internship at a big company by her dorm mate's brother. With our family's current situation, I don't want Cornely to worry. Let's celebrate her birthday another day."
Brett took over, "Today is Cornely's birthday, and you don't have to tell her about the house being pushed. Let her enjoy her birthday."
Understanding his parents' desire to shield their children from worry, Carver's anger towards the Clement Family surged again.
However, he wouldn't show it in front of them. "Okay, then. I'll prepare a birthday gift for Cornely when she comes back."
As evening approached, Carver was planning to take his parents and Oswald's family out for dinner. However, Cornelia called.
"Brother, are you alone?"
Hearing that Cornelia had something inconvenient to discuss, Carver stepped outside. "What's wrong?"
Cornelia said with distress, "Brother, do you have any money? I agreed to celebrate my birthday with my dorm mate, and we planned to share the expenses. But just now, she told me that her brother booked a room at the Golden Imperial Hotel. I'm afraid my money won't be enough to cover my share."
Upon hearing this, Carver frowned. "Doesn't your roommate know about your situation?"
Cornelia replied, "She does, so she apologized and said it's okay if I don't join. But everyone has already been notified, and if I don't go at the last minute, it might be awkward. Also, I hope her brother can introduce me to an internship."
Understanding Cornelia's current anxiety, Carver said, "Wait for me. I'll come over. Since her brother is definitely going, I'll be there too."
"But don't tell Mom and Dad; they might say I'm not sensible."
"Rest assured, everything is under control with your brother here."
...
Finding an excuse to leave, Carver had Giselle drive him to the Golden Imperial Hotel while also calling Hedy to bring the car meant for Cornelia directly to the hotel.
Upon arriving at the Golden Imperial Hotel, Cornelia and her friends were still on their way.
Looking at the five-star hotel, Carver muttered, "Why do I feel like Cornely has made some questionable friends?"
Knowing Cornelia's situation and then letting her brother book a hotel like this, it felt like they were taking advantage of Cornelia.
As for Cornelia saying her roommate only found out about it, Carver had reservations.
Giselle, who was left alone during the day, still had some grievances. "Your thoughts are too complicated. Maybe she really didn't know before booking?"
Carver pretended not to hear Giselle's resentment. Pushing open the car door, he got out. "I hope it's just my overthinking. Otherwise, tonight could be problematic for that brother and sister."
Although it was near evening, Giselle, who was abandoned during the day, still harbored some small grievances. "Your thoughts are too complicated. Maybe she really didn't know before booking?"
Carver pretended not to hear Giselle's complaints and got out of the car. "I hope it's just my overthinking. Otherwise, tonight might not go well for that brother and sister."
"Are you not coming with me? I can prepare a grand gift for your sister."
Carver waved his hand. "My sister is just an ordinary college student. I don't want you, Miss Wen, to startle her classmates."
Therefore, he didn't even mention Cecilia, to avoid troubling Cornelia and making her classmates feel distant from her.
Giving Carver a disdainful look, Giselle stepped on the gas. "You're such a scumbag, appearing and disappearing at will!"
Carver chuckled and walked to the entrance of the hotel, waiting.
As night fell, several taxis arrived one after another. Cornelia and more than ten of her classmates walked down together.
"Brother!"
Seeing Carver, Cornelia quickly approached. Taking advantage of her classmates still behind her, she whispered, "I checked; having a meal at the Golden Imperial Hotel with so many people will cost at least twenty thousand dollars. Is it okay?"
Carver gave Cornelia a reassuring look. "Don't worry, tonight, no matter how much you all eat, I can afford it."
"Cornely, is he your brother? He's so handsome!"
As more than ten people approached from behind, some of the girls' eyes lit up when they saw Carver.
Cornelia straightened her emotions and introduced him naturally, "This is my brother, Carver. Brother, this is my roommate Nelly York, and also Nancy Summer. The others are classmates from our class."
Nelly York was a stylish girl, while Nancy Summer had short hair and seemed quiet and gentle.
Carver nodded to them. "Hello, thanks for taking care of Cornely. I appreciate it as her brother."
Seeing Carver's polite and gentle demeanor, it easily made people like him.
But Nelly York only glanced at him before shifting her gaze away, displaying obvious disdain.
On the other hand, Nancy Summer smiled and replied, "We take care of each other. You don't need to thank us."
Carver glanced at Nelly York, wondering if she bullied Cornelia. Suppressing his thoughts, he greeted everyone, "Let's go inside. Standing here is blocking the door."
"Cornely, why go in when Rita hasn't arrived yet? Do you know which private room it is?" Nelly York took the conversation with displeasure. "And you can't afford to share the cost. You'll end up relying on Rita's brother to pay the bill. Just stay put."
Feeling inexplicably targeted, Carver couldn't help but furrow his brows.
Where did she get the idea that I can't afford to share the cost?
But Nelly York seemed to have noticed something, and with excitement, she exclaimed, "That's Rita's brother's Mercedes S. I've ridden with Rita before. They're here!"
