Chapter 14

Monic’s eyes watered and her face went red with anger, “You’re saying that I’m a kid?!” She screeched and I winced. I honestly pitied Jake. No, I seriously do. Monic’s a handful, that’s for sure and for him to like her, well, he’s got a lot on his plate but I’m not saying she’s not worth it because she has a heart of gold when she wants to show it.

Monic huffed and stomped her way out of the school’s cafeteria.

“Ooh. Good luck, bro.” Adam winced, patting his friend’s back and leaned back in his seat. “Yeah, thanks man.” He muttered before running out of the cafeteria to catch up with Monic.

You must be confused. Let’s rewind shall we?

------ Minutes before ------

“Babe, you can’t go, it’s too dangerous and you can get hurt!” Jake stressed out in exasperation as he tried to convince Monic to stay home and not join our trip to the Underground Place after school.

“And why not?” Monic’s eyes flared with defiance as she stood her ground and crossed her arms across her chest, tapping her foot on the floor.

The girl pulled off the intimidating stance just fine for a girl who wouldn’t hurt a mosquito. I thought silently as I watched the scene unfold.

They bickered for a few more minutes before Jake unconsciously implied that she can’t take care of herself.

I winced at that. He’s in for it now.

“What are you trying to say?!” Monic shrieked in fury as her face grew red and her fists clenched on her side.

Jake looked lost, looking mostly dumbfounded. I wanted to smack him upside the head for being such a clotpole but alas, he’s too far away and I’m too lazy to walk that far.

Anyway, that’s what has happened and now, Monic’s pissed and Jake has to win her love back bla bla bla, love and its drama, cue snort.

Ain’t no one got time fo dat.

“Should I be worried for my best friend’s well-being?” Adam asked as he turned to me.

I munched on my burger and twisted the soda bottle’s cap off and sipped the drink, the sweet prickling sensation bursting against my taste buds before answering him.

“Nah, Monic would probably give him a hard time but she won’t hurt him. She wouldn’t hurt a fly even if she was promised a million bucks for it.” I waved off his concern and continued focusing on the delicious burger.

The school’s cafeteria makes mean burgers. I should have the chef make me one every day, these burgers are so good that it’s not supposed to exist. Not that I’m not grateful it does, it’s the best food I’ve tasted for a while considering my diet consisted of Chinese take outs.

The bell rang while I gulped down the last bit of the burger and savored my last moments with it before collecting my trash and throwing it into the bin.

“So, I’ll see you after school then?” Adam asked as he gave me my bag.

I nodded in response. He is my ride so I can’t really refuse.

“See you later, Nerd.” I felt a smile threatening to make an appearance at the nickname, causing me to remember our first conversation. I’m growing fond of this guy and I have no idea whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing.

When class was over, I found a note in my locker.

Football practice until 4. Sorry.
–Adam

Of course he got recruited in the football team. I mentally groaned and sighed in faint annoyance. Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy for the dude but I do not have a good experience with the football guys in this hell hole.

I guess I’m doing my homework early then.

I took a hold of the thick ass book for history and business studies. This is a pain in my ass, I mean look at these shits. Who in their right mind would even have the time to create a book this fudging thick?!

I finally finished sorting out the things I wanted to bring with me to the bleachers and took my files out to shove in the papers I got from my lectures. Cue mental groan here. I’m so going to fail future tests if I don’t get my shit straight ASAP.

It took me a few minutes after looking around that I realized it was quieter than usual and hushed tones were spreading around me. I tried to ignore the prying eyes of my schoolmates as I stuffed all the books and files into my bag and closed my locker.

Still, people wouldn’t quit staring and me, acting as a nerd, has no power in changing that because I’m expected to be weak, voiceless and a pushover. Not saying that’s what nerds are, honestly, nerds are awesome but these bitches are just too bitchy to even consider it.

I have always tried my best to not draw attention towards me or anything which obviously hasn’t been working. It’s like I’m a retarded, walking, sparkling, rainbow colored dolphin. Okay, maybe not that much but you get the idea.

I jogged towards the school’s hind grounds where the field is. I scanned the place from the bleachers for Adam and finally caught him standing in a half crouched position, with the team’s jersey and a helmet on. I think it’s supposed to be some strategic position, I mean it must be since the coach is practically screaming his head off pointing everywhere like a madman.

Cut me some slack, I know street fighting, not football. Adam finally took his helmet off, his hair was damp with sweat and he wiped his forehead before catching my eyes. Even from where I stood I still can see his smirk and him wiggling his eyebrows. I made a grossed out face, sticking my tongue out and he laughed loudly which was apparently not allowed because next thing you know, he’s getting yelled at by his coach.

“Jones! Get your head in the game and stop laughing! Be serious about this! The season’s coming up! You’ll be fighting our biggest rival!” His coach ranted. I stuffed my fist in my mouth to hold back the hyena-like laugh that’s about to blow out.

He averted his eyes from me, yelled a ‘Yes sir’ and put his helmet on, getting back to his former position.
