The round moon quietly rose above the branches.
William Lin had just entered the village, but ahead of him was the narrow village road, too small for the car to pass through.
He gently tapped Susan, who was still sleeping in the passenger seat.
Susan, with sleepy eyes, looked at William Lin and asked, "Are we there?"
"We've arrived, but we'll have to walk a short distance from here. The car can't go any further," William Lin replied.
Susan nodded, stretched, and opened the car door before getting out.
William Lin found a suitable spot to park the car and, with their luggage in hand, led Susan towards his home.
On their way, the conversation between William Lin and Susan attracted the attention of the village's dogs. The barking began, and soon, the entire village's dogs joined in.
William Lin hurriedly held Susan's hand and rushed towards his home.
When they reached the doorstep, William Lin realized that the key was in the luggage. He saw the lights inside the house were still on, so he knocked on the door.
"Who is it?" his mother's voice came from inside.
"It's me, Mom!"
As soon as William Lin spoke, he heard the sound of something being thrown against the door.
"Hurry up and leave! I don't have a son like you!"
Hearing the voice from inside the house, William Lin was confused. He looked at the house again, and yes, it was his own house!
Seeing William Lin's bewildered expression, Susan couldn't help but laugh, feeling unable to hold back her amusement.
"What's going on, Mom? Open the door. I've brought a friend!" William Lin quickly said.
Upon hearing that there was a friend, William Lin's mother got up and reluctantly opened the door.
She had intended to say a few words, but when she saw Susan next to her son, her expression changed immediately. She pushed William Lin aside and quickly pulled Susan into the house.
After entering the house, William Lin noticed the shoe insoles on the table, and he knew his mother had been doing odd jobs again. He quickly picked up the shoe insoles and said, "Mom, your eyesight isn't good, and I told you not to do these things. Your son can support you."
William Lin's mother wanted to argue when she heard this but refrained from doing so, considering that Susan was present. She continued pouring water.
William Lin's mother poured a cup of tea and handed it to Susan, saying, "Dear, are you hungry? You look tired. There's not much to offer in this remote village, but would you like me to make some noodles for you?"
Susan quickly waved her hand and said, "No, no need." However, her stomach betrayed her, growling audibly. Despite having some biscuits on the way, she hadn't eaten a proper meal and was feeling a bit hungry.
Hearing her stomach growl, Susan blushed and lowered her head in embarrassment.
William Lin's mother rushed into the kitchen upon hearing the sound and started preparing food.
Susan watched William Lin's mother enter the kitchen and smiled mischievously at William Lin, saying, "You've really caused trouble now. Your mother doesn't even recognize you anymore!"
William Lin heard Susan's teasing but didn't know how to respond. He simply picked up his luggage and began arranging it, ignoring her remarks.
In fact, William Lin couldn't understand why his mother was so angry. He couldn't recall doing anything to upset her.
After William Lin finished arranging his luggage and left the room, he saw that Susan was already eating noodles, but there wasn't any more food on the table.

Seeing Susan's reaction, William Lin's mother said, "What, do you expect me to feed you? Can't you help yourself from the pot?"
William Lin hurriedly went to the kitchen. Susan had already eaten some biscuits, and he hadn't eaten anything yet. Without hesitation, he picked up a bowl of noodles and started eating it in the kitchen.
After finishing his meal, he came out to the living area. He saw that Susan had also finished eating noodles and was chatting with his mother.
Originally, his mother had a smile on her face, but when she saw William Lin, her expression turned cold instantly.
Watching his mother's reaction, William Lin was utterly puzzled. He kept racking his brain but couldn't figure out what he had done to upset her.
"Susan, there isn't much to see around here, and I don't know if you'll find it comfortable. I'll tidy up Lin's room for you, and tonight, you can sleep there. He can sleep on a makeshift bed in there," William's mother said to Susan without waiting for her response.
Before Susan could reply, William's mother got up and went to clean the room.
Hearing this, William Lin knew he would be sleeping on the makeshift bed tonight for sure. Since his father passed away, the room had been cluttered with various items and couldn't be cleaned up quickly.
William Lin looked at Susan with a touch of resentment and sighed, "I can't tell whether she's your mother or mine. I'm starting to suspect you're her real daughter!"
Susan giggled, shrugged, and gave the impression that it wasn't her problem.
With a hint of annoyance, William Lin rolled his eyes at Susan and said, "You should rest well tonight. You've been in the car for most of the day, and I'll try to finish my tasks as soon as possible tomorrow so I can take you out for a stroll."
Susan nodded eagerly; after all, she had come along for a vacation.
Shortly after, William's mother came back and asked Susan, "Susan, take a look at the bedding. If it's not enough, I can get more blankets for you."
Susan peeked into the room and saw two thick quilts already laid on the bed. She quickly said, "It's enough, thank you. I don't want to trouble you anymore. I'm just here as a guest."
"Not a bother at all," Lin's mother said. "William Lin never really had many friends growing up, and we rarely saw him bringing friends over to the house."
"If you need anything later on, just call me. I'll be in the next room," he said, stepping out of the room and then poking his head back in to emphasize his point.
Watching Lin's mother's warmth, Susan Su felt a hint of sadness in her heart. She shook her head, then went straight to bed. The bumpy car ride today had left her feeling quite tired.
After Lin's mother came out, she looked at William Lin, who was tidying up the dishes and said, "Come out with me!" With that, she set down the blanket and walked into the courtyard.
William Lin followed his mother to the courtyard, looking at her with a puzzled expression.
His mother, her face filled with anger, said, "What's going on between you and Alisa Zhang? I can't even show my face in the village now."
"Now the entire village knows that you've found a rich woman outside, kicked your girlfriend to the curb, and even brought that rich woman to humiliate her. You need to tell me what's really going on. I can't believe you would do something like this!"
As Lin's mother grew increasingly agitated, her breathing quickened.
William Lin, seeing his mother in distress, quickly activated his spiritual powers. He pretended to help his mother by patting her back and sending soothing energy to calm her racing heart and lungs.
"Don't pat me anymore," his mother said. "First, you need to explain what's going on. If you really did such a thing, I wouldn't recognize you as my son, even if it costs me my life. I'll go find your father right now!"
Listening to his mother's increasingly exaggerated words, there was no choice but to briefly explain the situation to her.
William Lin had initially hesitated to tell his mother because he was afraid of her emotional reaction. However, he was surprised to find out that his mother had already learned about it. This explained her cold demeanor towards him that evening. It also made him realize that she hadn't called him for some time, something he should have realized earlier.
In the story, William Lin was also aware of what was going on. Samuel Zhao called his mother and told her that William Lin had abandoned Alisa Zhang after finding a wealthy woman, and had humiliated Alisa Zhang in every way possible. So he sadly jumped off the building, as did Alisa Zhang. He was fortunate to be rescued by Samuel Zhao; otherwise, he would not be alive today.
Lin's Mother, who had finally discovered the truth, became so enraged that she couldn't speak and sat down on the ground.
