After the death of Miranda, Scott was broken. He had isolated himself in his apartment and didn't go anywhere.

His heart was screaming in agony when he got to know that she was pregnant with his child.

He had lost all his happiness together. He could have saved them if he had decided to go with her. 

Losing his wife along with his first child was eating him alive. As a result, he didn't continue his college that year.
