Thirty minutes later, Van nudged me awake. “What?” I asked as I opened my eyes groggily. The back of my throat was so painful from holding back unshed tears. I didn’t dare cry. Not while Esmeralda was queen and Ronaldo was alive. As I’ve told myself time and time again since mother and father died, crying would have to be for later.
