Bang!
Edwin barged into the bedroom, startling his sister Leila who was packing her belongings.
"What madness is this now?" Leila, having just taken a bath, her skin flushed and fragrant, startled by his sudden appearance.
She had even sprayed perfume after her bath, deeply stung by Titus's remark that he could "smell something stale".
"Sorry, sis!" Edwin slapped himself, apologizing in the same manner as Oscar. "I shouldn't have insulted your husband! He is your man, and thus my brother-in-law! I should respect him and treat him as part of the family!"
Leila was initially pleased with her brother's apology, but the more she listened, the more uncomfortable she felt.
Who asked you to call him brother-in-law?
Who asked you to treat him as family?
Edwin, can't you just be yourself? Aren't you usually stubborn?
"Are you done?" Leila coldly said.
"No!" Edwin declared emphatically. "I just had a man-to-man talk with my brother-in-law. When I learned about his past, realizing he had been an unsung hero in the Northern Savage Army for ten years, I found that his contributions to Red Dragon Country are no less than Jorge's, just that one was in the limelight and the other behind the scenes."
Leila, ever so sharp, how could she not see through Edwin's cunning scheme?
After packing, Leila said expressionlessly, "What deal did you make with him?"
Before Edwin could make excuses, Leila added, "If there's one lie, I won't let you get your way."
"My brother-in-law promised to take me to Jorge's memorial service. You should know, the pass is hard to come by, and there are only a few in all of Blackhills." Edwin dared not lie, knowing full well his sister's fierceness, when she got tough, not even the gods received any mercy.
Otherwise, their father wouldn't have left Blackhills in such a hurry ten years ago.
The reason for leaving was merely a huge argument between father and daughter, after which Leila angrily declared that this home couldn't contain both of them.
Since then, their father never dared to return to the Hodges Family Villa, and he seldom visited even Blackhills.
"Just for a few passes, you sold me out?" Leila asked coldly.
"Of course not, you're my sister, how could I sell you?" Edwin hurriedly explained. "My brother-in-law just wants…"
"I want his exact words," Leila said coldly.
Seeing his sister's sharp gaze, Edwin faltered, stammering, "My brother-in-law said you haven't been nice to him, suggesting you pamper him a bit. As long as you keep him satisfied, he could take us and over thirty thousand military academy students to pay our last respects to General Titus."
Pamper him?
And keep him satisfied?
From the first meeting to now, how many times has this jerk disgusted me? Has he ever said anything decent?
"My brother-in-law also said," Edwin, noticing his sister's murderous look, hurriedly added, "that in this Hodges family, he doesn’t pay regard to anyone but gives you three points of respect."
Exhaling a breath of murky air, Edwin carefully said, "It's evident that your brother-in-law still cares a lot about you..."
Leila's mind went blank, almost bursting into laughter from anger.
Where was the respect? Where was the care?
Edwin took the initiative to pick up the heavy suitcase, whispering, "Sis, let me take you downstairs. Your brother-in-law has been waiting for you for a long time."
Leila felt utterly disheartened.
Edwin placed the suitcase in the car, then hurried to open the car doors for them, smiling broadly, "Sis, brother-in-law, I forgot to tell you."
Before they could react, Edwin said emotionally, "Happy honeymoon!" and then dashed away.
Inside the room, Sophia stood by the window, watching the newlywed couple drive away, a touch of contentment appearing on her kind face, "Titus, you wouldn't know, your son is extremely cunning. I'm almost at the end of my life, yet this boy nearly broke through my defences."
...
Inside the car, the atmosphere was incredibly awkward.
Leila drove with a cold face, her gaze as if she could kill.
Titus pulled out his phone to play a small game, killing time.
"When do you plan to get the tickets for Edwin?" Suddenly, Leila's voice, cold as ice, rang out.
Though it was hard to say, as his sister, how could she not know about Edwin's admiration for Jorge? When she was kidnapped, she heard from grandma that Edwin hadn't slept for three days and nights, just waiting by the phone for news.
As his sister, she couldn't bear to see him unable to fulfill even this small wish.
"What's the rush? The memorial service isn't until three days from now," Titus replied nonchalantly. "It's not concert tickets. Are you afraid they'll be sold out?"
Is this the attitude to ask for help? Or did Edwin not convey my message clearly?
Leila could see that this bastard was brushing her off, a surge of anger rising in her heart, she coldly said, "Then why don't you tell me, how do you plan on being served by me?"
Titus, seemingly oblivious to Leila's anger, shrugged, "I've never bowed or bent over for anyone in my life, the concept of serving others is something that I don't understand."
You don't understand, do I understand then?
In the Hodges family, even Sophia, who everyone respects, fears her to some extent, yet now she has to coax this bastard and make sure he's well served?
Leila, with a frosty expression, said word by word, "How about I perform a strip dance for you?"
