"Stop! Don't run!" Just as Alex Ye stepped out of the bar, he heard a series of cries in the distance. He turned around in surprise and saw a young man in his early twenties holding a woman's handbag, sprinting towards him. A young policewoman in uniform was chasing after him, shouting loudly.
Although Alex Ye didn't know exactly what was happening, he could guess that the young man with shifty eyes, holding a woman's handbag, was undoubtedly a thief. As a good citizen of the Republic, it was only natural to assist the police in such situations. Maintaining a harmonious society was a responsibility that Alex Ye readily accepted.
When the young man reached Alex Ye, he yelled, "Get out of my way!" as he extended his hand to push Alex Ye. Alex Ye seized his wrist, made a quick move, and the young man stumbled, falling flat on his face. Alex Ye then grasped the man's arm, applying pressure on it. There was a sharp snap, and the young man's arm went limp.
The young policewoman caught up and, seeing Alex Ye subduing the thief, gave him a grateful look. She said, "Thank you!" then proceeded to handcuff the thief. Turning to Alex Ye, she said, "Sir, please come with me to the police station to give a statement."
Alex Ye scrutinized the policewoman. With her almond-shaped eyes, willow-leaf eyebrows, and oval face, she looked striking in her uniform. Alex Ye had rarely seen a girl with single eyelids who could be this beautiful. However, he wasn't particularly fond of police stations. Despite it being just for a statement, Alex Ye didn't even want to step inside. He wasn't inclined to interact with the police either. Notions of assisting the police and upholding a harmonious society were all nonsense to him. Besides, the current police force wasn't necessarily dedicated to serving the people—they were just a bunch of thugs in uniforms.
"No need to," Alex Ye replied coldly, turning to leave.
Abigail Wang was momentarily taken aback. Alex Ye's indifferent attitude irked her. In the police station, she was considered a "flower of the force." There were countless young talents vying for her attention. On the surface, she was an authoritative enforcer of the law. Though only at twenty-two years of age, she had been in the force for less than half a year, but was already on the verge of being promoted from a probationary officer to a full-fledged constable. Soon, she would likely become a third-grade inspector. She wasn't the type to be haughty and unreasonable. She treated others fairly. However, the man before her blatantly disregarded her. She couldn't help but feel angry. In her eyes, this man must have had a reason to avoid coming to the police station. With this in mind, Abigail Wang sternly commanded, "Stop!"
Alex Ye halted, turned around slowly, glanced at her, and gave a disdainful smile. He said, "What's this? Want to take me to the police station?" Yet, in his mind, he thought, "Seems like a pretty face won't change the fact that she's just like any other cop, picking on the vulnerable. She probably doesn't understand a thing about serving the people or protecting their lives and property. Those were just empty words they tell themselves."
Abigail Wang did consider taking him in, but she had no evidence. She couldn't just arrest someone based on suspicion alone, could she? After some hesitation, Abigail Wang said, "I suspect you're carrying illegal weapons. I need to search you."
Alex Ye let out a cold laugh, his eyes sharp as daggers, fixed on Abigail Wang. He said, "Search me? Have you lost your mind? On what grounds?"
Confronted with Alex Ye's intense gaze, Abigail Wang shivered involuntarily. A chill crept up from the depths of her heart. Nevertheless, she mustered the courage to say, "According to the laws of Hua Xia, law enforcement officers have the right to conduct searches on individuals they suspect. Sir, please cooperate. Thank you!"
Firm but not overbearing, it seemed she was ready to stand her ground against Alex Ye.
Indeed, Alex Ye did have a weapon on him—the Bloody Wave, a dagger he never parted with. Although having just a dagger wouldn't necessarily incriminate him, if these police officers insisted on pressing the matter, there was a risk his identity could be exposed. That was something Alex Ye wanted to avoid. He just wanted a quiet life, taking good care of his old man, until they both reached a ripe old age.
Suddenly, Alex Ye's eyebrows lifted, a plan forming in his mind. A faint smile played on his lips. "You want to search me? Alright, I'll strip down for you." As he spoke, he began unfastening his belt, looking poised to undress completely.
Abigail Wang hadn't expected this man to resort to such exasperating behavior. She was momentarily taken aback and snapped, "What are you doing?"
"Aren't you going to search me? I'll strip down for you," Alex Ye retorted stubbornly.
"You..." Abigail Wang was infuriated by Alex Ye's obstinacy, but she felt powerless. Besides, if it hadn't been for him, she might not have caught the thief at all. She even owed him a debt of gratitude. "Alright, you may go!" Abigail Wang ultimately relented. Though she was quite annoyed, there was little she could do.
Alex Ye gave a faint smile, thinking, "She's really quite an adorable cop." Glancing at the clock, he saw it was already past eleven in the evening. He bought some late-night snacks and hailed a taxi straight to the hospital. Helen Han had been taking care of his old man all day, and on top of that, she was studying. She must be exhausted. He decided to let her go rest at home while he stayed overnight at the hospital. It would also give him a chance to chat with his old man. After all, eight years was a long time, in which they had not seen each other, and there were many things he wanted to say.
