"Mila, you go back first. I'll talk to you about this later," Edwin said before hanging up the phone. Worry and anxiety were evident in his eyes, emotions not intended for his wife.
Mila pushed him away coldly. "Go do your work. After all, she seems to be more important to you."
But her heart was aching.
Edwin seemed like he wanted to say something, but in the end, he chose silence. He hailed a taxi, placed her inside, and hurriedly drove away.
Mila couldn't help but smile bitterly. What was the use of persisting in a marriage with a man who constantly had another woman on his mind?
Upon returning home, the servant greeted Mila, but she seemed not to hear. She looked at the black-and-white bedroom, feeling like a clown-like figure in a play she didn't belong to. Her marriage felt like a farce, and it was time for it to end.
Mila waited for Edwin all night. He never called back. His indifference pierced her heart like a needle.
"Baby, I'm sorry. Mommy can't give you a complete home. But don't worry, Mommy will love you even more in the future."
Mila burst into tears but signed the divorce agreement that had been printed overnight. Every stroke felt like a cut to her heart, dripping with pain. She removed the wedding ring Edwin had given her and placed it on the divorce papers. This ring, once cherished, had left imprints on her finger over the past three years. Even without it, the marks remained, just like her love for Edwin - indelible.
Mila felt worthless. Afraid she might weaken, she resolutely packed her bags and left home.
"Madam, Miss Chu isn't in good health, and Mr. Ye is with her. He asked us to take you abroad, and we're leaving now."
As soon as Mila stepped out, she saw Edwin's bodyguard blocking her way. His words incensed her.
"Why do you get to decide that I go abroad? I won't go!"
"I'm sorry, madam. Mr. Ye said it's not up to you!"
Before Mila could react, the bodyguard swiftly approached, knocked her unconscious, and carried her into the car.
She awoke in an abandoned warehouse, stripped of her clothes, a man beside her, violating her. The camera snapped away, capturing all the humiliating poses.
"Miss Chu, everything is done."
After the photographs were taken, they called Carrie.
Carrie sneered, "Very good. Once these photos are posted online, I don't believe Edwin will want a woman who betrayed him as his wife. Remember to clean up after it's done."
"Of course."
The man hung up, doused the warehouse in gasoline, and set it ablaze. The flames shot up, the heat stifling.
Mila woke from her stupor, surrounded by fire. Smoke filled her lungs, making it impossible to speak. The flames showed no mercy.
"Help! Help!"
Mila ignored her nudity and pounded on the warehouse door with a stick, but she heard a voice from outside.
"Madam, I'm sorry, all of this was ordered by Mr. Ye. You can go with peace of mind, Mr. Ye will choose a good cemetery for you."
Mila froze. Did Edwin want her dead? Why? Just because she was pregnant like Carrie? To legitimize Carrie's child, was he willing to go this far?
Edwin, you're so cruel! You can't even stand your flesh and blood?
Mila's heart filled with sorrow. She looked up at the sky and let out a wail.
"Edwin, I hate you! I was blind in this life, falling in love with such a heartless and ruthless man like you. If there's a next life, I'll make you taste the pain of being betrayed by the one you love!"
The raging fire consumed her words. Breathing became difficult, her eyelids heavy. She could no longer fight, collapsing to the ground, letting the fire consume her body and soul.
Five years later, Assistant Tom handed Edwin some information.
"Mr. Ye, this is the information of the designer sent by HJ Group in the United States. They're expected to arrive in Han City today. Should we send someone to pick him up? I heard this designer is very famous abroad. The sports car he designed is worth a fortune. Please, if we hadn’t cooperated with HJ Group this time, they wouldn't have sent this designer to us for consultation."
"Katherine?"
Edwin's eyes narrowed.
"Yes, it's designer Katherine."
Tom nodded quickly.
Designer Katherine had recently gained fame as a sports car designer. Her "Wing of Love" Sports Car won first prize in an international design competition. This car hadn't even been released, yet there was a scramble to buy it. Katherine only produced two units, and the price was staggering. Yet, people were still clamoring to purchase them.
Now, due to the collaboration with HJ Group, Katherine was in Han City. Edwin, who had an interest in sports cars, was intrigued. Thus, Tom reminded him, if they could bring Katherine to YH Group...
Edwin's gaze narrowed again. He took a look at Katherine's information but stopped abruptly when he saw her Chinese name.
