chapter 18 Mommy has a fever

Aurora was her child too. Back then, Providence had smiled upon her, blessing her with two children at once, a set of twins. Regrettably, while Mattew was fine, her daughter, Aurora, suffered injuries due to the dense smoke that had infiltrated her heart and spleen. This led to several months in an incubator.

The doctor had once said that she might not make it, but it was Mila's impassioned plea, coupled with Leo's influence and economic support in the United States, that gave Aurora a fighting chance. Unfortunately, Aurora's kidneys were congenitally failing, and there was no way to restore her to a normal, lively, and healthy child like others.

Out of 365 days in a year, Aurora spent around 300 days in the hospital. Tubes snaked across her frail frame, her face pallid year-round. Every time Mila thought of this, she couldn't help but feel a surge of hatred towards Edwin.

If it weren't for him, would their child be in this condition?

Aurora was growing weaker with each passing year, yet they couldn't find a suitable kidney donor. This was because Aurora and Mattew shared Edwin's rare negative Rh blood type. The doctor asserted that a close relative with a matching blood type was their only viable option. But how could a cold-hearted person like Edwin willingly donate his kidney?

Knowing she was carrying his child, he had been so cruel as to set mother and child ablaze. How could he be expected to save Aurora?

Mila couldn't let go of these long-standing grievances. She wanted Edwin to taste the heart-wrenching pain of betrayal and hurt from someone he loved. Ultimately, she intended to cut open his chest with her own hands, extracting his kidney to save her daughter!

He owed Aurora this, and he would have to repay it!

Mila seethed with hatred, her expression tinged with ferocity. Finally calming down, she realized she was drenched in sweat.

Remembering the burns on her body needed attention, Mila hastily got up, took a shower, and then headed to the tattoo and embroidery studio recommended by Leo.

Upon learning of Leo's referral, the master was exceedingly deferential to Mila. She lay on the bed, enduring the incessant pricking of needles, feeling as if she'd been transported back to the inferno of five years ago, the heat and desperation overwhelming.

She was soaked in sweat and blood, but she gritted her teeth and endured it until it was over. Mila persisted with the embroidery for over four hours, even fainting in the process. The tattoo artist grew concerned, but Mila insisted he continue. In the end, she was utterly spent. After a brief rest, she rose and drove back to her residence.

As Mattew and Luna returned from class, Mila prepared a simple meal in the kitchen. Suddenly, she felt light-headed and utterly drained. Her health had been less than robust in recent years. Assuming it was just a cold, she sought out some cold medicine from her room, took a dose, and then fell asleep on her bed.

When Mattew and Luna returned from class, they found the house empty but food prepared.

"Mommy, Mommy!"

Mattew swiftly sought out Mila. Upon opening the bedroom door and discovering her unconscious, Mattew was stricken with panic.

"Mommy, what happened? Aunt Lan, come quick, Mommy's burning up!"

Given Mattew's small stature, he couldn't move Mila at all, so he called out to Luna for assistance.

Hearing Mattew's distressed words, Luna rushed over, only to find Mila flushed, her body radiating intense heat.

"What's going on? Mattew, call for an ambulance right away. Your mother doesn't appear to have an ordinary fever."

Mattew's face turned ashen upon hearing this. He quickly retrieved his phone, his tiny hands trembling, but he managed to dial for an ambulance.

Upon the ambulance's arrival, Mattew's eyes glistened with tears, though he valiantly fought them back. It was heartrending to witness.

"Mattew, don't worry, your mommy will be okay."

Luna consoled Mattew, but she harbored little optimism.

The ambulance swiftly conveyed Mila to the hospital for urgent treatment. It turned out to be an infection and fever resulting from an allergic reaction to the medication.

"What's wrong with you? The patient had an allergic reaction to the tattooing medication, yet she proceeded so recklessly. We're fortunate the tattoo didn't cost her life. If she hadn't reached the hospital in time, she might have gone into shock."

The doctor's reprimand was rather stern. Both Luna and Mattew were taken aback.

They were clueless as to why Mila had impulsively decided to get a tattoo, but Luna promptly admitted her mistake.

"Doctor, we were in the wrong. Please make her well."

"Don't worry, after tonight's observation period, if everything goes well tomorrow, she should be fine. However, she still needs to take her medicine, and the tattoos on her body require disinfection. Oh my goodness, young people nowadays really do the strangest things."

The doctor shook his head and departed.

As Luna turned around, she caught sight of Mattew gingerly lifting Mila's clothing to inspect the tattoo. Mommy had never shown any inclination toward tattoos. What on earth could have prompted such an action?

Mattew didn't understand, but he squinted thoughtfully.

He was determined to get to the bottom of this matter!
