chapter 13 Don't ask if you shouldn't ask

After leaving YH Group, Mila promptly visited a pharmacy to purchase some ice packs and anti-inflammatory medicine before returning home. She breathed a sigh of relief that Mattew had accompanied Luna to the kindergarten; otherwise, she'd have had to face her son's inquisitive gaze regarding her injuries.

At times, Mila felt immense gratitude towards fate for bestowing her with an angel like Mattew when she needed it most. Despite his young age, he understood her remarkably well.

Thinking of her son, Mila's countenance softened considerably. She arrived home and gently applied the ice pack to her face. The soothing coolness made her squint her eyes.

Why hadn't Carrie become Edwin's wife yet?

Considering her role in giving birth to Edwin's son, she should have been a significant figure. Edwin held feelings for her, enough to forsake his current wife for her, didn't he? So, why the delay in marriage?

Mila couldn't fathom this, and she felt a pressing need to delve into the matter. But she had no intention of easily forgetting Carrie's slap today.

Recalling the searing pain of the fire burning against her skin, Mila felt it as vividly as if it were happening now. The agony was so intense, that it bordered on being unbearable. That sensation was etched into her memory, even if she were to descend into hell.

And she vowed never to let go of anyone who subjected her to such torment!

Mila, her face still partially concealed, retreated to the bedroom. She chose not to inform HJ Group about the incident, opting to lie down and quietly drift off to sleep.

Tom swiftly uncovered Mila's address. When he handed it to Edwin, Edwin's eyes narrowed once again.

It was Luna's residence!

He recalled that Mila's closest friend was Luna.

Katherine not only shared the same name as Mila, but she also resided in the home of Mila's dearest friend. Was there truly nothing amiss here?

Or could it be that Katherine was Mila?

At the thought, Edwin's fists clenched involuntarily.

"Dig up everything for me. Use any means necessary, and I want to know all the information about Katherine. Especially anything from the past five years."

Tom was taken aback by Edwin's words.

"Mr. Ye, Katherine's information has been exceptionally well-guarded in the United States. We might not be able to access it. Others have attempted before, but they came up empty."

"Then use unconventional channels."

Edwin's directive caught Tom off guard.

Tom was fully aware of the nature of these unconventional methods, and Edwin hadn't employed them in years. It was surprising that Edwin would call for such means to gather information about Katherine, and Tom couldn't help but be curious.

"Mr. Ye, what's going on with this Katherine?"

"Some things you need not ask."

Edwin's warning caused Tom to flinch.

"Yes, I'll get on it right away."

After Tom left, Edwin impatiently lit a cigarette. He hadn't smoked in a long time, but today, he desperately needed nicotine to ease his restlessness.

Different faces, but the same physique, the same stride, and even the same friends. Was this all merely a coincidence?

But if Katherine truly was Mila, why hadn't she recognized him just now? He could still vividly recall how deeply Mila had loved him five years ago.

What had truly transpired five years ago?

When the internet buzzed with news of Mila's clandestine rendezvous with a lover, followed by a fire in which her body was presumed lost, he couldn't believe it. How could a woman who loved him so fervently carry on a secret affair? Additionally, the two bodyguards had vanished, and there was no trace of Mila's remains. No one knew the details of what had transpired.

He could still remember that Mila had been pregnant five years ago. This implied that their child had likely perished in the fire, correct?

Edwin's brows knitted tightly, and the cigarette's ember flickered before burning his fingers.

He shuddered violently and promptly extinguished the cigarette, yet his gaze remained fixed on the black spots left behind.

He could still recall the Mila who was terrified of pain. The fire had been so fierce, consuming everything in its path. How excruciating must it have been for her?

Edwin no longer had the heart to focus on work. He grabbed his suit jacket and swiftly left his office, leaving his secretary wearing a bewildered expression.

This marked the first time Mr. Ye had skipped work.

Edwin paid no heed to what others might think. He promptly started his car and drove straight to Luna's house.

The doorbell chimed incessantly.

Startled awake, Mila felt exceedingly weak. She realized it couldn't be Luna returning; Luna had a spare key. She hadn't ordered any deliveries either. So, who could be at the door?

Could it be Carrie?

If it was, Mila had no intention of opening the door for her so readily.
